San Refugio is a favorite beach for many locals on the Santa Barbara coast.  The shallow, sandy beach in a protected cove is perfect for kids.  You can bike the trail along the beach bluff between Refugio, El Capitan, and other beaches along the coast.  Don’t forget to plan a day of kayaking along the coast too.

Stroll the cobblestone streets in the historic district of Charleston or soak up the sun at the beach on Valentine’s day.  You can see the first theater in the US, cruise the harbor or enjoy the white sand beaches.  This historic city has a huge variety of activities including RV camping at the county parks.

Charleston County Park’s James Island Campground is 643 acres of open space and still convenient to explore everything the city has to offer.  The campground has both full hookups and primitive sites.  You can even take a shuttle service to the downtown convention center so you don’t have to drive!

Alamo Lake State Park, Arizona

In Wenden, Arizona, this state park is home to warm temperatures and access to Alamo Lake. Fishing and boating are what this area is known for. In fact, this lake is one of the best bass fishing lakes in the entire state.

The Pacific coast has mild winters but great ocean storms creating massive swells that come crashing in.

Kalaloch campground in the Pacific Northwest that is open year-round.  Since it is in the coastal region of the Olympic National Forest, you can send time at the beach, hike the trails and wonder at the rain forest.  I would suggest adding this area as part of a Washington Coast road trip.

Update: Unfortunately, Big Basin Redwoods State Park has been damaged by a major wildfire in 2020 and is only partially open until further notice. We are so sad about this but as California’s oldest state park, we know that this area will recover. So we decided to leave it on the list so you can add it to your bucket list. Make sure to check with the California State Park website for updates.
