When planning our road trip to Coeur d’Alene Idaho, we researched all the places to camp near town.  This article has been written based on our review of the campgrounds in Coeur d’Alene, some of which we have camped at for up to a week at a time.  Our favorite spots may surprise you. Plus, I have a couple of secret places on this list (that we have actually stayed at)

Coeur d’Alene sits on the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene, the second largest lake in North Idaho. The lake is surrounded by sandy beaches, blue skies, and forested mountains. Your family will enjoy swimming, bird watching, hiking trails, boating, fishing spots, cycling trails and so much more!

Campgrounds in Coeur d’Alene include national forests, state parks, county lands, and nearby year-round mountain resorts. It is an ideal place to enjoy a great camping experience, surrounded by Idaho’s nature.

We have camped in tents and RVs in and near Coeur d’Alene.  We stayed a week in a campground right in town our travel trailer.  The last trip, I rented a full-size van and camped with 5 kids in our make-shift campervan.  ( I tried to find the perfect small motorhome to rent, but because RV rentals in the area are so popular, I had to get creative and rent a 12-passenger van to van camp.)

My other option was to have a travel trailer delivered to a campsite which would have been similar to our travel trailer at home.  However, we wanted a little more freedom to camp on our way home to Colorado too.

Pro tip:  You can find RV rentals on the peer to peer networks RVshare and Outdoorsy right in Coeur d’Alene.  Campers do go fast though, so make sure to reserve early!

Check out RVs for rent in Coeur dAlene here on Outdoorsy. As part of the network we have a discount for your first RV rental – click here for $50 off.

This list of places to camp is longer than many of the lists you will find.  We have family in the area and have spent a lot of time digging up the best places to stay right in town and camping near CDA.

Kootenai County Fairgrounds RV Park

Kootenai County Fairgrounds RV Park Coeur d'Alene
Family-friendly camping in Coeur d’Alene

We stumbled upon this campground by calling the local county office.  This may be the best-kept secret in North Idaho.  This is a beautiful grassy campground right in the center of town.  Each space has a large paved area to park an RV, full hookups, and a spacious grassy area.  However, there are no shared facilities or bathrooms so you must be fully contained.

We stayed here for a week in our 35-foot travel trailer and enjoyed the 4H horse demonstrations and dog shows.  My only complaint is that the rates have been increasing as more people have discovered my secret place.
